Resurrection Week

This Thursday March 27, students and young adults from all over Amarillo, will come together for a night to celebrate that Jesus is our RISEN LORD! Join us @ 8pm, on the WTAMU campus, where groups from around the area will share in the celebration during this life-changing time of year. The event will be held at the Branding Iron Theatre in the New Fine Arts Building

Marcus Dawes Band will lead us in worship of our King.

We hope to see everyone there for an incredible time of worship and fellowship with other believers in celebration of our Risen King!

We all come from such different places and circumstances and the LORD reveals to each us in such different and magnificent ways. So this week we thought it would be encouraging to hear from different people their thoughts on BLESSING.

May you be “blessed” by their words . . .

I started thinking tonight about blessing, rolling through the list of all the obvious ones – shelter, food, clothes, car, job, free country, etc. But what about those blessings that are not material? Believe me I love my creature comforts, but if they were all stripped away, would I still be blessed? As a child of God, I have to answer absolutely.
After all, man cannot live on bread alone . . .
Two words popped out at me as I began to think about the deeper blessings I have because of Christ – SUFFERING & HOPE. I am blessed with SUFFERING because through it the LORD grows, deepens, and stretches me in wisdom and in grace towards others. Through suffering you begin to see with new eyes that we are all on a journey and all need grace so desperately. I am blessed with HOPE in that suffering. Through the Holy Spirit we have been gifted an unquenchable HOPE, an ability to keeping going, persevering through the trials, to see that Light at the end of the tunnel. What an incredible thing to be given to be able to learn through Suffering and live through it because Hope.

Blessings!
Sunday night’s message was awesome and something I really needed to hear and reflect on. I feel like I do get caught up in only the things I can actually see and touch when I think about blessings, but it is so much more! FORGIVENESS!!! This blessing is what has been on my heart. When we just think about what Jesus did for us! It is such a blessing to know the guilt goes away and you are restored and have peace in your heart. And what a blessing that is for us to do the same for each other. Knowing that if another person wronged us and we can FORGIVE! That would bring peace possibly to them, but it can bring it to the forgiver as well.
Now Blessings From a Teacher!
I looked to my classroom for other blessings as well. Since this is where I am all day everyday, I thought I would share a quick story of how I was blessed by one of my 5 year olds today. I have a little boy in my class who is one of four children and they recently lost their mother at the beginning of the school year. They lived out of state, in poverty, and when they lost their mom they moved here. A relative offered to take care of the kids (what a blessing she is in their lives)!!! Their mom was electrocuted in their back yard in front of all of the kids. They sat there and watched their mom die. I can’t even imagine. He has been a blessing in my class just to see his smiling face everyday! It is so neat that we just talked about blessings on Sunday because this little boy blessed me so much today. We were doing our daily writing and he came up to me and read his story with just a smiling glow on his face. His story said, “I accepted Jesus in my heart last night!” We just had our own little party there between the two of us. I wish you could’ve seen the excitement on his face and how proud he was. I wish we could all show that same excitement for our God!!! Faith like a child! He blessed my day with that little story. I hope this encouraged you a little and maybe you can see that even when times are tough, Jesus shines through and pours down His blessings!!!!

I feel like God blesses me everyday with each breath I take. Knowing that I have the opportunity to praise Him and glorify Him in anything I do that day. I feel like God has blessed me with gifts that must be used at every opportunity to bring about glory to the Father and advance His kingdom in this world. I feel like God has blessed me with a family that keeps me grounded and focused on Him instead of myself, teaching me to understand a little better what it means to be loved by the Father. I feel like God has blessed me with a ministry that will make a real difference in this world and for the future generations to come. Looking at the stars, the mountains, the snow, I realize that I am blessed with a God who cares about me even when I am so tiny in all of grand and glorious creation. Yet he loves me? I am blessed that the God of the universe and all creation knows me by name and knows what I am about to say before I know myself. I am blessed!

“Have a blessed day…” That is how the email ended, and I got to thinking – ‘a blessed day’ – what does that mean? Is there something particular about this day, something special – it’s not my birthday, or a vacation day – those are easy ‘blessed’ days. I have to work, meet with someone, write a sermon, plan an event or two…in fact the day will rush by and before I know it, it will be 5pm, and I will not have finished half the stuff I wanted to, then home, then dinner, then a quick walk for the dogs, then a call I couldn’t make and a chat with my wife…before I collapse into bed, and get my 6 hours and then start all over again….and yet somehow, in the midst of that – there was blessing????
So often, we get caught up in the business of life that we forget to realize the subtle blessings that we have experienced throughout the day. To start, I have a great job, at a church I love, in a ministry I am passionate about. I have the ability to think and work and use my God-given-giftedness. I go home to a fridge full of food and a wife whom I adore…I sleep soundly, knowing that my faith is in the One who cares for me more than I can even imagine…
I guess what I am trying to say, is that it is a blessed day, even when I don’t take the time to realize it. I am blessed, and thus need to bless others.

This Saturday, as a global community, we will observe World AIDS Day. This year’s theme is Stop AIDS: Keep the Promise – an appeal to remind us that the fight against AIDS is not over.

We have all seen the commercials and ads from organizations like ONE.org, DATA, World Vision. We’ve seen celebrities like Bono, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, and Madonna don their grungies and head into the poorest communities around the world to raise awareness for everything from disaster relief, Malaria, AIDS orphans, food shortages, and lack of clean water. But one crisis stands above them all as one of History’s worst. Here are a few statistics and quotes from noted World leaders on the AIDS epidemic . . .

The AIDS Crisis
Africa has been hit harder by the HIV/AIDS virus than any other region of the world. More than 17 million Africans have died from AIDS and another 25 million are infected with the HIV virus, approximately 1.9 million of whom are children.
Every day in Africa:
• HIV/AIDS kills 6,600 people
• 8,800 people are infected with the HIV virus
• 1,400 newborn babies are infected during childbirth or by their mothers' milk.

“There is a continent—Africa—being consumed by flames. I truly believe that when the history books are written, our age will be remembered for three things: the war on terror, the digital revolution, and what we did—or did not do—to put the fire out in Africa. In response to World AIDS Day, we will have with us this Sunday at iforty, a guest speaker from Africa. His name is Otieno Thomas and he is the director of the VCT (Voluntary Counseling and Treatment Center for AIDS) Clinic in Kisumu, Kenya. We will also have information on a few organizations where you can get involved.

Because I am lazy and don't want to recreate an entire other post, I am going to rip my own thoughts from my own blog to share with you guys. The Father has just been showing me some incredible lessons in joy and gratitude and I think it's something we all need to hear. Even in our times at iforty, we have been talking about how to start a fire and how we can step out of ourselves to be light for the LORD. He is so incredibly faithful to us, even those of us who are starving college students and new graduates just let loose into the world. We have so much to be thankful for.

Happy Thanksgiving!
We live in a culture of instant gratification. At the touch of a button, snap of our fingers or swipe of our credit card we can obtain our hearts desire in an instant. We eat fast food, have high speed internet, have stores and restaurants open 24 hours a day and don't even have to watch commercials anymore with the brilliance that is TiVo. Our cell phones are a crucial part of our existence next to food, water, and shelter. I mean think about it, when was the last time you misplaced or accidentally left your cell phone at home or in the car. You panicked didn't you? Afraid you might miss that important call or text message. And with all of these things come the inevitable moans, groans, and complaints. The internet isn't fast enough, this store didn't have the exact thing I wanted, I had to wait in line, my food was cold and it took way too long, that person in front of me is driving way too slow, etc etc etc. We are an impatient, complaining, and often ungrateful race. Something has been lost in the chaos of what we want and what we actually need. Patience is unheard of, time - a concept to be rushed through.

Just the other day, I found myself ending my work day frustrated, stressed out and agitated because the server at work was crawling, setting me behind by several hours and making my work take three times as long. I came home last night in a foul mood, complaining and really wishing I had something to hit or yell at. (Being that my last entry was on choosing joy, perhaps I shouldn't be admitting my impatient moodiness? Hmmm . . . oh well it's about being real isn't it?) That night as I stood in line at Wal-Mart with my measly box of cereal and turkey bacon, I found myself silently grumbling because I was stuck behind the slowest and most incompetent person alive at the self check-out. The lady at the register next to me was on her cell phone, barking orders at her young child and complaining to a friend on the phone about how she hated the Holidays, as she was being forced to cook food for her family and worst of all her in-laws. Then there was the man behind me, even more impatient than I, loudly sighing, as if to announce to the whole of Wal-Mart that he was pissed and someone better hurry up and get out of his way. The air was crackling with tension, shot nerves, and impatience.

I arrived home that night exhausted, pissed off, and tied up in knots. What a great way to end the day!! The fact that I had to get up the next morning at 4:30am for the Community Prayer Breakfast didn't appease the situation any either.

But the LORD is certainly more clever than I.

Tuesday morning I woke with a word floating around in my head: Gratitude. Now I know that with Thanksgiving just a couple of days away, this word is not some great revelation. Everyone is thinking about what they are thankful for at this time of year, right? Do we really know the true meaning of gratitude? Not just being thankful for this or for that, but really being grateful even in the face of a storm?

The Father always seems to find a way in my life to tie things together. He has been calling me to choose joy, but as I learned yesterday, that's not all. Gratitude must be Joy's partner. They must travel together. One can not survive without the other. They are companions with Sorrow and Suffering. They build and stretch us.

Hindsight is 20/20 and if I look back on the last several days, I can see lesson after lesson followed by blessing after blessing where the Father was teaching me about Gratitude, teaching how blessed I truly am; even in the midst of some incredible trials. I wish I could share them all, but I am simply going to leave this post with a song. Music speaks so powerfully in my life. This is a song I have loved for some time, but discovered again last night. I am amazed at how he sets things in our path just when we need to be reminded of them again. The song is by Nicole Nordeman and I found a video version of it on YouTube done by a church for their Thanksgiving service. So enjoy . . .

Well, here we are, our first venture into the blogging world. It is hard to know exactly how to start this thing off . . . “they” do say that first impressions are everything . . .

So I guess I’ll start with who we are. . .

We are iforty – a college/young adult ministry here in Amarillo, TX. Our name is derived from Isaiah 40:28-31 . . .

Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they walk and not be faint.

We are a ministry focused on showing college-age and young adults the hope that can only be found in Jesus Christ. We live in a stressful, fast paced world and it is often hard to find authentic, hope- filled community. iforty’s mission is to create an environment where young adults can experience God’s hope through praise and worship, Bible study, and authentic community.

We hope, through this blog, to have an avenue to share our journey with the masses – through stories, thoughts, the occasional profound revelation, anecdotes, and perhaps a little random silliness thrown in for good measure. We hope you will be a part of our journey . . .
